Chapter 13 - North Ridge

North Ridge Outdoor Academy had a website full of smiling children beside pine trees. Its brochures promised discipline, leadership, and character-building retreats. None of the contact numbers worked.

Rachel Bennett recognized the logo. “Noah had a sweatshirt with that mountain on it. Jason said it was a gift.”

Ruiz and the state team started coordinating with officers across the border. Naomi warned me not to go after them.

“Ben, you can help Emily by staying available and staying safe.”

I hated that she was right.

Emily had returned to my apartment with a safety plan, medical follow-ups, and the option to speak with a counselor. That night she sat cross-legged on the couch, turning her old puzzle pieces face-up one at a time.

“Did Noah have anybody who was looking for him?” she asked.

“His mom. And now a lot of people.”

She slipped a blue piece into place. “He thought nobody wanted him.”

“People who hurt children tell them things like that. It doesn't make them true.”

Emily leaned against my shoulder. “I don't want to be brave anymore.”

“Then don't. You can just be ten.”

She cried quietly into my shirt, and I sat with her until the puzzle blurred beneath my own tears.

At 10:04 p.m., Rachel called. Noah's gaming account had sent another message: a photo of a pine-covered hillside taken through a dirty window. In the lower corner was the back of a red pickup truck.

The license plate was partially visible.

Ruiz ran it. The registration came back to a company affiliated with North Ridge.

Then a second photograph arrived. It showed a child's hand holding a scrap of paper against the glass.

On the paper were three words in crooked letters.
