Chapter 14 - The Road Through the Pines

The search teams reached North Ridge before dawn. The place was not an academy. It was a cluster of weather-beaten cabins surrounded by a high fence, with a locked gate and a sign warning against trespassing.
Police found two abandoned vehicles and a kitchen full of food that looked recently prepared. A recording from a nearby gas station showed Nicole buying supplies the previous night. Jason was driving the red pickup.
For several hours, no one could find Noah.
I sat at the kitchen table with Rachel on speakerphone while Emily built a paper bird out of notebook scraps. Sarah rested on my couch, too weak to stand for long but unwilling to be out of earshot.
“I'm sorry,” Sarah said to Rachel. “I should have stopped him sooner.”
Rachel's voice shook. “Find my son. We can talk about everything else later.”
There was no cruelty in it. Just a mother choosing the one thing that mattered.
At 8:17 a.m., Ruiz called with a breathless update. A search team had found a trail of food wrappers leading from the cabins to an old fire lookout. Someone had broken a window from the inside.
“Was it Noah?”
“We're following fresh footprints.”
I relayed the news. Rachel began praying under her breath.
Half an hour later Ruiz called again.
“We found him.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“He's frightened and cold, but he's walking and talking. A medical team is checking him now.”
For the first time in days, the room breathed.
“Where are Jason and Nicole?” I asked.
“They left before we arrived.”
Noah had escaped through the lookout window when he heard an engine. He told investigators Jason had planned to drive him farther away after meeting someone that morning.
“Meeting who?” I asked.
Ruiz's silence lasted a beat too long.

“The sheriff,” she said. “Noah heard him say the name Brice.”
