Chapter 8 - A Face in Uniform

The man beside Jason was County Sheriff Walter Brice.

He had shaken my hand at community events. He had visited Emily's school for career day. His campaign signs were still planted along the highway with the words TRUST AND FAMILY printed beneath his smile.

Ruiz studied the photograph at my kitchen table. “This doesn't prove criminal conduct,” she said.

“No, but it tells us who Jason thinks protects him.”

“That's exactly why I want this handled outside the county.”

She contacted state investigators and took custody of the flash drive. Naomi insisted on a documented chain of evidence, and for once I was grateful for every boring legal phrase she used.

The drive contained short videos from a camera Sarah had installed near the garage. One showed Jason meeting Keller behind the house. Another showed Nicole carrying folders into a van marked VANTAGE FAMILY SUPPORT.

In a third recording, Sarah confronted Jason beside the pool.

“You're taking money for kids who aren't even placed there,” she said.

Jason checked the patio door. “Keep your voice down.”

“Noah's transfer is fake. His mother never consented. Where is he?”

“Sarah. You're making this worse.”

She held up a folder. “I'm giving everything to the state.”

Jason grabbed her wrist. The recording ended when the camera was knocked sideways.

I watched it without breathing.

Ruiz stopped the video. “Sarah was documenting placement fraud, possibly unlawful confinement. We need every contractor record tied to Vantage.”

My phone rang. The screen displayed an unknown number.

“Ben Carter?” a woman asked when I answered.

“Yes.”

“My name is Rachel Bennett. Detective Ruiz said you found your daughter.”

“I did.”

Rachel inhaled sharply. “Then maybe you can help me find my son.”

“We're trying.”

“No. Listen to me. Noah left me a message through an old gaming account. It came in five minutes ago.”

I put her on speaker.

The message was only eight seconds long. A boy whispered, “Mom, the train stopped. I think they're moving me tonight.”

Then, in the background, a familiar man shouted, “Get off that phone.”

It was Jason.
