Chapter 17 - Under the Deep End

“The pool,” I said.
Sarah shook her head. “Not in the bags. In the drain cover beneath the deep end.”
She had sealed a memory card inside a waterproof key case and fastened it beneath the drain housing while Jason was away. When she learned he planned to destroy the contents of the garage, she decided the dirty pool was the one place his pride would keep him from inspecting too closely.
“You went into that water?” I asked.
“I was trying to keep Emily safe.”
Ruiz requested a specialized recovery team. The remaining pool water was drained and processed. Hours later, a technician recovered the case exactly where Sarah described.
The recording showed Jason directing Nicole to bring Noah into the garage. Sarah stepped between them, demanding to know why the boy was being held. Jason tried to shove past her; Noah stumbled and Sarah caught him. Then Jason shouted for the camera to be turned off.
In the edited clip he'd threatened to release, Sarah's protective movement had been cut to look like an assault.
The full recording did more than clear her. It captured Jason saying, “Brice already signed the placements. Keller will write the report. No one is going to check.”
For the first time, the evidence connected the financial records, the false reports, and the child's confinement in one conversation.
I watched Sarah's face as the truth played. She didn't look triumphant. She looked tired.
“Do you think Emily will ever feel normal again?” she asked.
“I don't know,” I said. “But she won't have to do it alone.”
Ruiz's phone buzzed. She read the message and stood.
“Brice has been located. He's negotiating to surrender.”
“And Jason?”
Ruiz stared at the screen again.
