Chapter 2 - A Mother's Last Call

“Where is she?” I demanded.
Jason glanced toward Mrs. Harris, who had already pulled Emily down into her yard. “Your ex-wife left. Ask her boyfriend.”
“She's got a boyfriend now?”
“You know Sarah. Secrets are her hobby.”
His smile was too practiced. I remembered the times he'd opened the front door with his hand resting on Emily's shoulder, as if the gesture were affectionate. I remembered my daughter staring at the carpet until I left.
Mrs. Harris yelled, “I've called 911, Ben!”
Jason's jaw tightened. He walked toward me, but I held up my phone, recording.
“Tell the camera why you locked a little girl in a dog cage.”
“It was for her safety. She was having behavioral problems.”
“She hasn't eaten properly. She hasn't had water.”
“That's what she's told you?” His voice rose. “She's a liar, just like her mother.”
The first siren sounded two streets away. Jason stepped back, then looked at the pool with such naked fear that my stomach turned.
Within minutes, two patrol cars and an ambulance were outside. I followed Emily into Mrs. Harris's kitchen. A paramedic wrapped my daughter in a blanket and asked gentle questions. Emily answered only with nods.
An officer named Keller approached me. “Sir, custody order?”
“Joint legal custody. Emily lives primarily here during school weeks. I have the paperwork on my phone.”
Keller wrote that down. “Mr. Vale says you forced entry and abducted the child.”
“She was locked up outside.”
“We're documenting everything.”
I wanted to trust that sentence. Then I saw Keller give Jason a familiar nod through the window.
Emily tugged at my sleeve. “Dad, my backpack.”
“We'll get another one.”
“No. The blue one. Mom put something in the lining.”
“What did she put there?”
Emily scanned the kitchen as though even the walls might be listening. “She said if she couldn't call you, I had to give it to you.”
“Where's the bag?”
“In my room. Under the bed.”
Across the street, Jason was speaking quietly into Keller's ear.
My phone vibrated with a voicemail notification. It was from Sarah, time-stamped Friday at 11:48 p.m., nearly two days earlier. The call had finally synced.
I pressed play.
“Ben, if you're hearing this, don't trust the police officer with the silver ring. And whatever you do—”
A door slammed on the recording.
May you like
Then Sarah screamed.
