Chapter 15 - The Sheriff's Promise

The news spread before breakfast. Sheriff Brice denied knowing anything about North Ridge, but investigators had found call logs connecting him to Jason on the night Sarah disappeared.

Brice went on local television wearing a dark suit and an expression of wounded dignity.

“These allegations are an attack on my service,” he said. “I have dedicated my career to protecting families.”

Emily heard the clip before I could mute it.

“He came to the house,” she said.

Sarah turned toward her. “When?”

“The morning after they took you away. He stood by the pool with Jason.”

“What did he say?” Ruiz asked over the phone.

Emily swallowed. “He said, ‘As long as the bags stay underwater, we control the story.’”

The room went still.

We had known about the pool from the beginning, but only now did I understand why Jason had watched it so carefully. The bags were not just garbage. They were the pieces of a cover-up, planted where Sarah had told Emily not to look.

Ruiz asked if Emily would feel comfortable speaking with a child forensic interviewer. We arranged it without pushing her for details. I wanted justice, but I was done making my daughter carry adult problems on her back.

The interview confirmed enough to support new warrants. Investigators recovered deleted financial records from the pool devices and matched altered placement forms to payments authorized by Brice's office.

That afternoon, state police arrived at the sheriff's department to question him.

Brice was gone.

A patrol dispatcher reported his official vehicle abandoned near the interstate. His phone had been left on the passenger seat beside a written resignation.

At the bottom of the note was a single sentence.
