Chapter 12 - The Name in the File

Sarah survived dehydration and exposure. At the hospital, Emily climbed onto her bed and held her mother so tightly the nurse had to remind them both to breathe.
For a moment, nobody mentioned Jason, the cage, or the pool. They were simply a mother and daughter who had found each other again.
Then Sarah asked for a notebook.
She wrote down everything she could remember: dates, license plates, suspicious calls, and a man Jason referred to as “the clerk.” He had provided sealed family-court information and advanced notice of hearings.
Naomi reviewed the names. One made her stop writing.
“Martin Shaw,” she said. “He works in the clerk's office. He handled your divorce file.”
Shaw had seemed quiet and helpful. He'd even reminded me to bring extra copies of Emily's school calendar to a hearing.
I stared at Sarah. “How long did you know?”
“Not long enough,” she answered. “I saw Vantage payments on a statement in May. Jason told me they were consulting fees. When I asked why my name was attached, he said it was for tax reasons.”
“And you believed him?”
“For a while.” Tears rose in her eyes. “I wanted this marriage to work. I told myself I was imagining things.”
I almost said she should have told me. Instead, I remembered Emily asking for extra nights at my place and my own decision to keep the peace.
“We both missed things,” I said.
Sarah nodded. “We can't miss anything else.”
That afternoon, the state investigators arrested Martin Shaw on suspicion of evidence tampering and unlawful disclosure of protected records. Keller was placed on administrative leave. Brice issued a statement calling the inquiry politically motivated.
Jason remained missing.
Ruiz came to the hospital late that evening. Nicole's apartment had been cleared out, but officers recovered a torn delivery label addressed to a property near the state line.
The label named a business called North Ridge Outdoor Academy.

Sarah gripped the blanket. “That's where Jason said he could make difficult kids disappear.”
