Chapter 10 - What Mark Told Her

Mark watched the video in Maya's conference room.

When Lily said "Dad," he shut his eyes.

"I didn't mean it like that."

"Then explain it," I said.

He admitted Diane had told him I could face legal trouble if I interfered with the trust. When Lily refused to repeat Diane's script, Mark told her things could get worse for me if she did not cooperate.

"You made an eight-year-old believe protecting me required lying."

His voice cracked. "Yes."

For the first time, he did not hide behind I didn't know.

Then he told us what growing up with Diane had been like.

"If she got angry, nobody ate until she stopped being angry. If I argued, she locked my bedroom from the outside. I learned to give her small things so she wouldn't demand bigger ones."

"And then you taught Lily the same survival strategy," I said.

He nodded.

The parenting coordinator ordered therapy, financial disclosure, and a parenting evaluation before Mark could ask for more contact.

Outside, Maya said, "You don't have to decide the marriage today."

"I already did. I'm filing for divorce."

That afternoon, Diane's sister Beth called.

"There's something you need to know about Mark's sister, Claire."

I knew Claire had died in a car accident at nineteen.

"Diane did the same things to her," Beth said. "Food. Isolation. Threats. When Claire tried to tell a school nurse, Diane convinced everyone she was unstable."

"What happened?"

"Claire was put in a psychiatric facility for eleven days."

"Was she sick?"

Beth started crying.

Mark's admission did not soften me, but it changed the shape of my anger. I had wanted a simple villain and a simple coward. Instead I saw how cowardice could become a machine: fear turned into silence, silence into permission, permission into harm. Mark had been hurt as a child, but Lily was the one who paid for the fact that he never learned to say no.

"No. Diane forged the history."

Then she added one last detail.

"Gregory Voss's father arranged the admission."
