Chapter 15 - Noncompliant

The plan had always included removing me.
Investigators found emails between Diane and Voss discussing an "emergency psychiatric pathway" if I resisted guardianship.
One message from Voss said: A public incident would help. Physical aggression is ideal.
The date was four days before dinner.
I stared at the screen. "She baited me."
Maya nodded. "It appears she expected you to react."
That did not erase my slap.
I still chose it.
Dr. Shaw helped me explain that to Lily.
"I was wrong to hit Grandma," I told her. "And I was right to protect you. Both things can be true."
Lily thought about it. "Grandma says admitting you're wrong means people win."
"I think admitting you're wrong is how you stop doing it again."
"Maybe Dad needs practice."
"A lot of it."
Mark's visits became quieter. He stopped bringing gifts and started bringing Uno cards.
One afternoon Lily asked him, "Why didn't you believe me?"
He answered, "Because believing you meant admitting Grandma was hurting you, and I was scared of her."
Lily frowned. "But you're big."
"Big people can still be scared."
"You should've been more scared for me."
Mark swallowed. "Yes."
It was not forgiveness, but it was honest.
Voss took a plea deal and agreed to testify against Diane. Under oath, he admitted she had asked how to create a paper trail suggesting I was unstable.
Then the prosecutor asked, "Did Mrs. Carver ask whether Lily could be coached to request a new guardian?"
"Yes."
"What did you tell her?"
"That direct coaching might backfire."
"What did she say?"
Voss lowered his eyes.
The prosecutor explained that the psychiatric plan depended on creating several small records rather than one dramatic lie: a complaint here, an angry voicemail there, a worried relative, a school note taken out of context. "Paper can make fiction look official," she said. That sentence stayed with me. Diane had not expected one person to believe everything. She expected institutions to believe each other.
"She said fear was more reliable than coaching."

That night an unknown woman left me a voicemail.
"My name is Karen Doyle. Diane did this to my daughter too."
