Chapter 8 - The Empty Classroom

Officer Cole ordered me not to chase the tracker.

"State police are moving," he said. "If whoever has Lily sees you, they may run."

Every part of me wanted to ignore him.

Instead, Jenna drove while I watched the dot crawl across my phone.

It stopped at Diane's lake cabin.

At the sheriff's substation, Mark arrived white-faced.

"Where is she?"

"Your mother's cabin."

"No."

"You tried to transfer her school. Your code was used at the house. Tell me you didn't know."

"I didn't know she'd take her. Mom said we should prepare paperwork in case the court placed Lily with family."

"You keep helping her build the weapon and acting shocked when she fires it."

A trooper entered.

"Cabin is occupied. Vehicle registered to Diane outside. One adult female visible. Child not yet visible."

We waited.

Ten minutes felt like ten years.

Then the radio cracked.

"Child located. Alive."

I covered my face.

A second message followed.

"Adult female fled toward tree line. Second adult male inside residence."

Police brought Lily out wrapped in a gray blanket.

She saw me and screamed, "Mom!"

I ran to her.

"Grandma said you signed papers giving me away," she sobbed.

"Never."

"I told her I didn't believe her."

"Good."

She pulled back. "Dad was here too."

Mark stiffened behind me.

"Today?" I asked.

"No. Before. Lots of times. With the man downstairs."

Officers led the second man from the cabin in handcuffs.

At the command post, Mark kept pacing until Officer Cole finally told him to sit down. "If your mother calls, you do not negotiate," Cole said. "You hand me the phone." Mark nodded like a frightened teenager. I hated him for being weak, then hated myself for noticing how genuinely afraid he was. None of it mattered as much as the moving dot on my screen.

I recognized him immediately.
