Chapter 18 - Guilty

Guilty on custodial interference.

Guilty on child endangerment.

Guilty on fraud.

Guilty on conspiracy.

Diane stared straight ahead as the verdicts continued.

For years she had controlled rooms by deciding who was good, selfish, unstable, hungry, or deserving.

Now twelve strangers were naming her choices.

After court, I sat in my car and cried.

"I thought this would feel bigger," I told Maya.

"Verdicts are paperwork," she said. "Your real life is at school wondering what's for snack."

I laughed through tears.

I picked Lily up at three.

"Did they believe me?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Can we get ice cream?"

"Absolutely."

She ordered two scoops, ate one and a half, then handed me the rest.

"I'm done."

Nobody called her greedy.

Nobody ordered one more bite.

Nobody turned the bowl into a punishment.

Diane later received prison time followed by supervised release and a long no-contact order. Voss lost his law license. Mark received probation, restitution, and mandatory counseling for the financial crimes he admitted.

Our divorce became final in July.

Mark moved into a small apartment fifteen minutes away.

His first unsupervised visit with Lily did not happen for nearly a year.

She chose the public library.

"Why there?" I asked.

"Because Dad can't make a big speech in a library."

Before leaving, she asked, "If I want to come home early, will you get me?"

"Immediately."

"Even if Dad gets sad?"

"Even then."

They came back fifty-three minutes later.

"How was it?"

"Fine," Lily said. "I beat him at checkers twice."

At sentencing, the judge told Diane that discipline was not a magic word capable of turning cruelty into care. Diane stared ahead, jaw tight. She never apologized to Lily. Strangely, that helped. I stopped waiting for the perfect confession that would make the past understandable. Consequences did not require her agreement, and healing did not require her permission.

Mark smiled.

For the first time, progress looked boring.

That was exactly what I wanted.
