Chapter 9 - The Lawyer in the Basement

Voss stopped pretending when police found the shredder.

The cabin basement held duplicate invoices, trust records, and drafts of custody petitions. Voss had been destroying documents while Diane took Lily upstairs.

Diane was arrested the next morning at a gas station twelve miles away with mud on her coat and thousands in cash.

That night Lily slept beside me with the lights on.

"Grandma said I cost too much," she whispered.

"You could cost every dollar I have and still be worth protecting."

"She said Grandpa left money because kids are expensive."

The trust administrator soon confirmed the scale of the fraud: more than $230,000 had been removed through fake reimbursements and consulting fees.

Some transfers carried Mark's signature. Others were signed electronically while he was overseas.

"Diane may have forged some of them," Maya said.

For the first time, Mark looked both guilty and used.

Then investigators recovered a video from the cabin.

On screen, Diane sat across from Lily.

"Again," she ordered.

Lily stared into the camera. "I want to live with Grandma because Mom is gone too much."

"Louder."

Lily repeated it.

Then a man's voice came from off-camera.

"Just answer, Lil. Then we can go home."

Mark.

I nearly shut the laptop.

Maya stopped me. "Watch the end."

Diane leaned closer to Lily.

"Tell the camera what happens if you don't cooperate."

Lily's eyes dropped.

"Mom gets taken away."

Investigators later found a child's suitcase in the cabin closet. Inside were new clothes, school uniforms, and a framed picture of Diane with Lily. My photograph had been cut from another frame and left in a drawer. Diane had not improvised the kidnapping that afternoon. She had prepared a replacement life, complete with a new school and a bedroom where I did not exist.

"Who told you that?"

May you like

Lily whispered one word.

"Dad."
