Chapter 6 - The Money Behind the Rules

Carver Family Solutions had no office, no employees, and no real services.
It existed to receive money connected to Lily.
One invoice billed $6,800 for "nutritional compliance training" during the same week Diane installed the pantry lock.
Another billed thousands for "behavioral stabilization" supposedly provided by Dr. Lisa Grant.
When we called the listed number, a receptionist said, "Dr. Grant is a pediatric dentist."
Fake service. Fake signature. Real money.
Mark came to collect clothes with a police escort.
"Did you know the invoices were fake?" I asked.
He sat on the edge of our bed.
"I made some bad investments."
"How bad?"
"A hundred and sixty thousand."
The room went silent.
He admitted losing money trading options, borrowing from retirement funds, then taking a private loan from Diane.
"Mom said the trust reimbursements were legal."
"Did starving Lily count as nutritional support?"
"I didn't know it got that bad."
"You never know until knowing costs you something."
He looked toward Lily's room. "I love her."
"Then why was protecting your mother easier than protecting her?"
He had no answer.
That night, Lily asked for seconds at dinner. When I said yes without hesitation, she stared at me as if I had given her a birthday present.
At seven thirty, the school principal called.
"Mrs. Carver, I wanted to confirm Lily's withdrawal."
"Her what?"
"Your husband submitted paperwork transferring her to a private academy."
"Where?"
The principal checked.
Maya showed me the invoices side by side. The language sounded professional enough to fool anyone skimming a statement, but the dates told the truth. One "behavioral session" had supposedly lasted six hours on a day Lily was at school. Another charged the trust for overnight care while Lily had been sleeping in my bed with a fever. They had turned ordinary childhood into billable fiction.
"Kentucky."

My blood went cold.
Diane owned a lake cabin across the state line.
