Chapter 5 - The Lock Came Back

My sister Jenna was approved to stay with Lily at the house.
When Elena returned, the pantry lock was back.
A small brass latch had been screwed into the frame after police left.
"I didn't install that," I said.
Elena photographed it. "The complaint says your fingerprints were found on the hardware."
Then I remembered Diane asking me months earlier to help move boxes in her garage. A nearly identical latch had fallen from one box. I picked it up and handed it back.
Maya's eyes narrowed when I told her. "We need the original evidence report, not somebody's summary."
Lily appeared holding a tiny silver key on a red string.
"Grandma used this when she stayed here."
It opened an old desk in Mark's study.
Inside was a second phone.
The screen lit before we touched it.
MOM: Did Rachel find the trust paperwork?
Then another message.
MOM: If she did, move the money tonight.
I photographed the screen and checked our joint savings account.
Balance: $312.
Three days earlier, it held nearly $78,000.
I called Mark.
"Where is our money?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"With Mom until this gets sorted out."
I laughed because the alternative was screaming. "You transferred our savings to the woman trying to take our daughter?"
"She's protecting family assets from you."
"You're stealing money and calling me unstable for noticing."
That afternoon, Maya subpoenaed the trust administrator.
By evening she called back.
"Rachel, the trust has reimbursed almost ninety-two thousand dollars for Lily's care."
"What care?"
"Private tutoring. Dietary support. Behavioral consultation. Temporary guardian services."
None of it had happened.
"Who approved the payments?"
"Mark."
"Where did the money go?"
A pause.
Elena also found fresh wood dust beneath the pantry latch. Whoever installed it had worked fast and expected nobody to inspect closely. Jenna remembered hearing the back gate at dawn but assumed it was a delivery driver. Suddenly every harmless noise from that morning became suspicious. I understood what manipulation did to a home: it made you question even the sounds you had ignored.
"An LLC called Carver Family Solutions."
May you like
"Who owns it?"
"Diane."
