Chapter 11 - Claire Was Not Crazy

Beth kept Claire's old papers in a cedar chest for twenty years.

At Maya's office, she opened it with shaking hands.

There were letters, school notes, and a photograph of sixteen-year-old Claire holding a handwritten sign:

I AM NOT CRAZY. I AM HUNGRY.

Beth cried. "She asked me for help. I believed Diane instead."

Mark arrived later and read one of Claire's letters.

He stood so fast his chair fell backward.

"Mom said Claire hated us."

"Claire was scared," Beth said.

Mark looked at me as if he had finally found the beginning of a story he had misunderstood his whole life.

"She did it to Lily because I let her."

I did not comfort him.

Some truths needed to hurt.

A retired nurse remembered Claire's admission.

"She kept saying her mother had lied," the nurse told investigators. "We were told those claims were symptoms of paranoia."

The trust administrator froze every remaining account and appointed an independent fiduciary. Lily's money was finally out of family hands.

At home, tiny things started changing.

Lily asked for extra cheese on her taco, then stopped eating halfway through.

"I'm not hungry anymore."

"Okay," I said. "It'll be here later."

Her shoulders relaxed.

Healing was not dramatic. It was a hundred small moments when nobody punished her for having a body.

The next morning, Maya called.

"Diane filed an audio recording from the dinner."

She played it.

My voice said, I swear to God, Diane, I will destroy you if you ever touch Lily again.

Then a crash. Then Diane crying, "She's violent!"

It sounded terrible.

Maya paused the file.

One of Claire's letters was addressed to Mark when he was fourteen. She wrote, I didn't leave you. I left her. Please don't believe everything she tells you about me. Mark read that sentence again and again. "I never got this," he said. Beth looked at the floor. Diane had intercepted the letter. For twenty years, Mark had hated a sister who had actually tried to come back for him.

"There's one problem. The timestamps don't match."

May you like

"Meaning?"

"I think they edited it."
