Chapter 1 - The Sound of MetalThe golf club struck the marble before Nathan heard the scream.

Then he saw the maid crumpled beside the staircase, one arm wrapped around her ribs, her pale blue uniform torn at the shoulder. Vanessa stood over her with the club raised again.

“Stay down, you pathetic maid!” she snapped.

“VANESSA!” Nathan's voice shook the chandelier.

His wife turned. For half a second, her expression was pure surprise. Then it became the cool smile she wore for magazine covers.

“Thank God you're home. She attacked me.”

The young woman on the floor lifted her head. Bloodless lips. A bruised cheek. Blond hair stuck to her face. Nathan knew her as Emma, the quiet employee who had worked at the house for eleven weeks. She had never once looked him directly in the eye.

A small voice floated from the landing. “Daddy?”

Lily stood behind the banister in purple pajamas, gripping a stuffed rabbit. She was four, tiny and frightened, and Nathan's heart seemed to stop whenever she called him that. He had been told Lily was Vanessa's niece, placed in their care after a family tragedy. Vanessa insisted they should never talk about her parents.

“Go to your room, sweetheart,” he said gently.

“No. Don't let her hurt Mommy again.”

Vanessa's face tightened. “She's confused.”

Nathan pushed past her, dropped to his knees, and pressed his jacket against Emma's shaking shoulder. “I'm calling an ambulance.”

Emma caught his wrist with surprising strength.

“Not yet,” she whispered. “Listen.”

“We can talk at the hospital.”

“If they take me away, she'll make you believe another lie.”

She glanced at the child, then back at him. Nathan saw the terror in her eyes wasn't fear of pain. It was fear of losing someone.

“Lily is your daughter, Nathan.”

The words hit harder than the club had hit the floor.

Vanessa took one step toward them. “She's delirious.”

Emma dug a folded photograph from the pocket of her apron. Nathan recognized himself in it, standing outside a diner five years earlier beside a young blonde woman he had been told died in a highway crash.

That woman was Emma.

And in the corner of the photograph, written in his own handwriting, were four words: Call me when safe.

Then Vanessa whispered something into her phone: “Plan B. Now.”
