Chapter 17 - The Night Before CourtThe night before Vanessa's trial began, Nathan couldn't sleep. He walked past the east corridor, where the dressing room doors were now sealed, and listened to rain against the windows.

Emily joined him with two mugs of tea. The bruises on her face had faded, but some pain still woke her at night. She was in physical therapy and working with a counselor. Nathan had learned not to confuse recovery with a clean photograph.
“I don't know what happens after tomorrow,” she said.
“Neither do I.”
“I loved you, Nathan. Then I spent five years believing you didn't want us. I can't just go back to who I was.”
“I don't want you to pretend.”
They stood in silence.
“I still love you,” he said. “But you don't owe me an answer.”
Emily looked at him with tired kindness. “Right now, I want us to be good parents. Everything else can wait.”
He nodded. It wasn't a fairy-tale promise. It was something stronger: a boundary he could respect.
At trial, the prosecution presented the foyer recording, financial records, forged documents, and witness testimony. Vanessa's defense challenged the reliability of several pieces and argued the household incident had been misunderstood.
Emily testified about the attack without embellishment. Rosa described Lily's fear. Cal admitted he'd obeyed orders to disable cameras, then explained why he'd preserved the backup. His honesty didn't erase his part, but it helped the court understand how the deception operated.
Charles testified under an agreement requiring full disclosure. His voice remained steady until he was asked why he had hidden a child from his son.
“Cowardice,” he said.
The courtroom was so quiet Nathan heard a pen fall.
At recess, Vanessa passed him under escort. She leaned toward him and whispered, “You think she's told you everything?”
Nathan didn't answer.
“She kept a letter,” Vanessa said. “The one your mother wrote on the morning she died. Ask her why she never gave it to you.”
When Nathan returned to the gallery, Emily was waiting. In her hand was a yellow envelope, sealed with Margaret's initials.
