Chapter 8 - A Judge at EightThe emergency hearing was scheduled for eight the next morning. Vanessa's attorney requested immediate control of Lily, arguing that the child's safety was at risk in a household consumed by scandal.

Nathan wanted to storm into Vanessa's room and demand answers. Maya stopped him at the elevator.

“Every time you react in anger, you're giving her a photograph she can use against you.”

“She's trying to take my daughter.”

“Then give the judge facts.”

Daniel arranged independent representation for Lily's interests and asked for a temporary protective order barring Vanessa from contact. Nathan supplied the backup foyer footage, Rosa's statement, the original threatening message, and the fact that Emily was receiving hospital care.

At court, Vanessa appeared in cream silk, with a discreet bandage on her wrist. Her lawyer described Emily as an opportunist and produced a document bearing Nathan's alleged signature waiving parental rights.

Nathan spoke quietly. “That isn't my signature.”

“How convenient,” Vanessa murmured.

The judge examined the papers, then looked at the footage. The courtroom fell silent as Vanessa moved toward Emily with the club.

“Your request for emergency guardianship is denied at this stage,” the judge said. “No contact with the child pending further review. A neutral child advocate will evaluate the situation. Parentage remains to be established through proper testing.”

It wasn't everything Nathan wanted. It was enough to keep Vanessa away from Lily for now.

Outside, reporters pushed cameras toward him. Nathan refused to discuss the child's identity. He asked for privacy and walked past without another word.

Lily was staying with Rosa under agreed temporary supervision. When Nathan called her, she asked only one thing: “Is Mommy coming back?”

“Yes,” he said. “She's getting better.”

“And are you staying?”

“I'm staying.”

Maya waited until he'd hung up. “We got a preliminary result from the records search.”

“Tell me.”

“Your father wasn't the only person paying Brookmere Services.”

She showed him a transfer authorization signed by someone he had never suspected.

His dead mother's name was on the account—but the most recent transfer was dated yesterday.

A storm rolled across the lake as Nathan, Maya, Evelyn, and Daniel reached the cabin. Daniel insisted the search be documented and confirmed the property's ownership records before anyone disturbed the study.

Evelyn showed them Margaret's hiding place: a brass floor vent beneath a narrow bookcase. Nathan lifted the grate. Behind it lay a metal document case wrapped in oilcloth.

Inside were copies of Lily's birth certificate, receipts from a prenatal clinic, handwritten letters from Emily, and a notarized statement Margaret had drafted but never filed.

Nathan read his mother's words aloud: “I assisted Emily Hart in keeping her child safe from coercion by Charles Hale and Vanessa Vale.”

“Vale?” he asked. “Vanessa's maiden name.”

Evelyn nodded. “She was using it for the shell companies.”

Maya photographed each document. The case also contained a digital recorder. Its final saved file was dated the night Margaret died.

Margaret's voice emerged between static bursts. “Charles, you cannot hold that child hostage to an inheritance.”

His father answered, “You don't understand what is at stake.”

“A child is at stake.”

A scraping sound followed. Then Vanessa, unmistakable: “Margaret, please put down the recorder.”

The file ended abruptly.

Nathan sat motionless. For two years he had believed his mother died after a fall on the back steps. No one had told him she'd been meeting Charles and Vanessa that night.

Daniel warned him not to jump to conclusions. “The recording establishes a confrontation. It does not tell us what caused her death.”

Maya agreed. “We take this to investigators.”

As she resealed the recorder, Evelyn found a final envelope taped inside the case. On the front Margaret had written: For Nathan, if I never make it home.

Inside was a single printed photograph of the lake house that same evening.

Someone stood behind Margaret at the steps.

It wasn't Charles or Vanessa.

It was Cal, Nathan's own security chief.
