Chapter 7 - The Woman With Two DeathsEvelyn Reed was sixty, silver-haired, and dressed like someone who had walked out of a long storm. She placed Margaret's handbag on the visitor's chair and stared at Nathan as if waiting for a verdict.

“I was your mother's assistant,” she said. “And her friend.”

“You were listed among the dead.”

“That was the point.”

Evelyn explained that Charles had financed a false traffic-accident report. No bodies were ever identified by Nathan; the documents reached him through a private attorney. Emily and Evelyn had been forced underground after refusing to sign custody papers that would place Lily under Vanessa's control.

“Why would Vanessa want my daughter?” Nathan asked.

Evelyn folded her hands. “Because your grandfather's trust passes to the eldest biological child of your generation's direct line. Charles controls it until you have a child. Vanessa knew about Lily before you did.”

Nathan shook his head. “She's been raising Lily in my house.”

“Where she could control both of you.”

Emily closed her eyes. “She made me work as a maid to stay close. Said she'd send Lily away if I told you.”

Nathan looked at the bruises on her face and felt a wave of fury that frightened him. But Emily touched his hand.

“Don't let anger make you reckless. That's what they're counting on.”

Evelyn handed Maya a notebook with dates, call logs, and copied checks. Some entries were detailed. Others were mere names. One repeated in red ink: Harborview Registry.

A lawyer named Daniel Price arrived, hired by Maya for Emily's immediate protection. He warned that proving identity and parentage would require records, lab testing, and careful chain of custody, not just a story or a photograph.

“We can prove it,” Evelyn said. “Margaret left originals.”

“Where?”

“In the lake house.”

Nathan remembered the property: a quiet cedar cabin beyond the county line, closed after his mother's death. Charles had forbidden him to sell it, claiming sentimental reasons.

Evelyn slid a second key across the table. “Under the floor of her study.”

A nurse handed Daniel a folded notice just delivered by courier.

Vanessa had filed for emergency guardianship of Lily, alleging that Nathan was unstable and Emily was a dangerous impostor.
