Chapter 6 - The Exit Behind the BoxesMaya silently pointed to the fire-exit diagram beside the unit door. An access hallway ran behind the storage blocks, separated by thin maintenance panels.

“We don't confront them,” she whispered. “We keep the evidence.”
She called 911 while Nathan slid the shoebox and envelopes into his bag. The men outside rattled the lock and cursed when they discovered it closed from the inside.
A metallic clang came from the adjacent unit. Someone was trying to break through the partition.
Maya spotted a loose service panel behind an old wardrobe. Together they eased it open and entered a narrow passage filled with dust. Nathan held his breath as they moved toward a rear exit.
An alarm shrieked when they pushed through the door into the alley. Headlights swept across them. Maya grabbed Nathan's sleeve and pulled him behind a dumpster as a van accelerated toward the street.
The police arrived minutes later. The storage manager identified a driver who had used a fake name, but security cameras captured the van's license plate. Maya insisted that the documents be logged, photographed, and duplicated before anyone touched them again.
At the hospital, Emily was awake. Nathan stood in her doorway longer than he intended.
“You got older,” she said softly.
“So did you.”
“Not the reunion I imagined.”
He pulled a chair to the bedside. “You should have told me.”
“I tried.”
She described intercepted letters, blocked accounts, threatening calls, and a lawyer who showed her forged documents claiming Nathan wanted nothing to do with Lily. Once, she'd come to the Hale offices with a newborn in her arms. Security carried her outside before Nathan even knew she was there.
“I thought you chose her,” Emily whispered.
“I thought you died.”
For a long time neither spoke. The silence wasn't forgiveness. It was the beginning of understanding how thoroughly their lives had been divided.
Nathan showed her his mother's letter. Emily's hands trembled.
“Margaret came to see us,” she said. “She helped us hide.”
“Then why did she stop?”
Emily looked toward the door. “Because someone found her at the lake house.”
In the corridor, a nurse called out for security.
A woman carrying Margaret Hale's old handbag had just asked to see Emily—and introduced herself as Evelyn Reed.
