Chapter 5 - Unit 214Nathan didn't go to the storage facility alone. He called Maya Torres, a former federal investigator he'd worked with during a corporate fraud case. She arrived with coffee, a recording device, and the expression of a woman who hated being lied to.

“You said your wife attacked someone,” Maya said. “You didn't say the someone was a woman you thought was dead.”
“I've had a complicated evening.”
“That's one word for it.”
The storage unit sat behind a tire shop on the west side of town. Maya photographed the lock, checked the corridor cameras, and asked the manager to remain nearby. Inside they found two packed suitcases, a child's winter boots, bank statements, and a shoebox labeled LILY—DO NOT LOSE.
The shoebox held birthday cards written in Nathan's handwriting. He had never mailed them; at twenty-eight he'd written letters to the child he'd imagined having with Emily, before he'd heard she was dead. He remembered storing them at his first apartment, then losing them when his father arranged a move.
He lifted the cards with shaking fingers. “How did she get these?”
Maya opened a bank statement. Repeated deposits came from an LLC called Brookmere Services. On every deposit date, there was a corresponding withdrawal from a Hale family account.
“Somebody paid to keep her moving,” Maya said.
A second folder contained photographs of Emily with Lily in a motel room, at a laundromat, outside a clinic. Different towns. Different years. Nathan saw the strain in Emily's smile and understood she had been hiding for most of her daughter's life.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope addressed to him. The handwriting was unmistakably his mother's.
His mother, Margaret Hale, had died two years earlier.
Inside was one sheet: Nathan, I knew about Lily. I tried to fix what Charles had done. If you find this, ask Evelyn why I was afraid of the lake house.
A motor idled outside. Maya turned off the unit light.
Through the crack beneath the rolling door, they saw two pairs of shoes stop.
One man said, “No witnesses this time.”
