Chapter 15 - What Margaret SaidThe retired paramedic, Denise Fowler, had saved a note from the original call because the timing felt wrong. She told Detective Walsh that Margaret was weak but alert for a moment.

“She didn't give a speech,” Denise said. “She just kept saying, 'Find Lily.'”

Nathan read that sentence three times. His mother hadn't used her final strength to accuse anyone. She had used it to protect a child.

The district attorney prepared a case focusing on documented assaults, falsified records, obstruction, and financial misconduct. The investigation into the lake-house delay continued separately; Nathan was warned that legal outcomes could be uncertain and slow.

Vanessa's lawyers fought the evidence fiercely. They claimed the backup video was incomplete, that Emily had invented their history, and that the child was being coached.

But the paternity test was independent. The hospital records traced Lily's early care. The forged waiver contained a wrong middle initial. Bank transactions led back to Brookmere. The evidence no longer depended on one vulnerable witness.

At a preliminary hearing, Emily took the stand. She spoke plainly, without rehearsed tears.

“I worked in that house because my daughter was there. I let people call me Emma because I was afraid they'd take her away. I kept telling myself that being near her was better than never seeing her again.”

Vanessa stared at her from the defense table.

“Why didn't you go to the police?” the attorney asked.

“I tried years ago. The documents said I was dead in one county and an abductor in another. Every door I knocked on seemed to open for the people who threatened me.”

“Are you saying everyone was corrupt?”

“No,” Emily answered. “I'm saying I was alone, and I was scared, and I never stopped trying.”

Outside the courthouse, Nathan found a message from Rachel with a picture of Andrew holding a homemade card for Lily. It said, I hope we can be friends.

For the first time in weeks, Nathan smiled.

Then Daniel approached, face serious. “Charles wants to testify,” he said. “But only if you hear his confession first.”
