Chapter 11 - The False SisterMaya reached the hospital before Nathan did. The woman had presented a convincing badge and paperwork, but the admissions supervisor followed protocol and called the issuing agency. No one there had authorized the transfer.

When challenged, the woman fled through the service stairwell. Hospital security captured her face, car, and license plate.
“Your daughter wasn't here,” Maya told Nathan. “Rosa never brought her.”
Nathan closed his eyes in relief. They had narrowly avoided another disappearance.
Emily sat upright in bed, clutching the hospital blanket. “She knew Lily's favorite toy. She knew what time Rosa usually brings her.”
“Somebody has access to our schedules,” Nathan said.
Maya checked the visitor log and found a staff member had received an unusual payment through a third-party account. She referred it to investigators rather than confronting anyone herself.
The next afternoon, police identified the impostor as Dana Pike, a licensed private investigator hired through Brookmere. Dana agreed to speak after learning her employer had submitted counterfeit court paperwork.
“I thought it was a family protection job,” she told investigators. “Vanessa said the mother was dangerous.”
“Who provided the child information?”
Dana hesitated. “An attorney.”
The name she gave was Richard Bell, the lawyer who'd handled Emily's supposed death five years earlier.
Nathan remembered Bell from childhood: always at the dining table, always close to his father, always fixing problems before Nathan knew they existed.
Emily stared at a photograph of Bell. “He's the man who handed me the papers saying you gave up Lily.”
Nathan took her hand. “We're going to fix this.”
She pulled back gently. “Don't promise an easy ending. We have a little girl who's learned to be afraid of the people who call themselves family.”
She was right. His job wasn't to deliver one grand speech. It was to keep showing up.
That night, Lily asked to sleep on the couch near him. He read a story until she drifted off.
Under her pillow he found a drawing of their house. Three figures stood outside. A fourth figure, colored in red, waited behind a locked door.
On the back Lily had written, in careful crooked letters: The room where Mommy cried.
