Chapter 12 - The Red RoomThe locked room was at the end of the east corridor, a place Vanessa called her private dressing suite. Nathan had never entered without an invitation.

With detectives present and appropriate authorization, the door was opened. Inside stood a vanity, racks of dresses, and a cabinet disguised as a mirrored panel.
The cabinet held prepaid phones, copies of Emily's employment documents, and a spreadsheet tracking every visit Lily made to her mother. A folder marked CONTINGENCY contained a forged report alleging Emily had kidnapped Lily from her legal guardian.
“That's the threat,” Emily said after viewing the documents. “Vanessa said if the police ran my name, she'd make me disappear again.”
Nathan recalled her exact warning: You'll lose both of them forever. It hadn't been a prediction. It had been a plan.
The investigators also found a recording made in the dressing room. Lily's voice was clear: “I want Mommy.” Vanessa's answer was cold: “You will call her Emma in this house.”
Nathan left before he said something he couldn't take back.
At the pediatrician's recommendation, Lily met with a child therapist trained in trauma. Nathan sat beside her on a rug covered with wooden animals while the therapist explained that children could tell the truth without having to choose sides.
Lily lined up a rabbit, a fox, and a bear. She put the bear behind the fox.
“Who is that?” the therapist asked.
“The daddy. He doesn't know the fox is scared.”
Nathan felt the words pierce him, but he let the therapist lead.
“Does the daddy know now?”
Lily nodded. “I think so.”
Later, Emily showed Nathan a small braid Lily had tied with a blue ribbon during one of their secret meetings. “She never stopped asking when you'd find us.”
Nathan held the ribbon carefully. “I didn't know how to look.”
At midnight, Maya called. A judge had authorized warrants involving Brookmere and Bell's records. The first bank search had uncovered a hidden beneficiary of the trust changes.
The beneficiary wasn't Vanessa.
It was a child named Andrew Hale.
