Chapter 1 - The Nursery Door

Ethan Hale opened the nursery door expecting to find his wife asleep in the rocking chair.

Instead, he heard the sickening thud before he understood what he was seeing.

"You will answer for this!" his mother screamed.

Margaret Hale had both hands twisted in Claire's hair. Claire, pale from three sleepless weeks with a newborn, was on her knees beside the oak crib. Before Ethan could move, Margaret yanked her backward and drove the side of her head against the crib rail.

"Mom!"

The word ripped out of him.

Baby Lily wailed beneath a quilt printed with silver stars, tiny fists opening and closing in panic. Claire tried to shield the crib with one arm while Margaret raised her hand again.

For one impossible second Ethan froze.

This was his mother. The woman who had packed his lunches, sat through every high-school football game, and cried at his wedding.

Then Claire looked at him.

Not angry. Not accusing.

Terrified.

Something inside him broke loose.

He crossed the room in two strides, caught Margaret by the shoulders, and shoved her away. She stumbled hard into the mahogany wardrobe, knocking a framed photograph to the floor.

"Stay away from them!" Ethan roared.

Margaret stared at him, stunned. "She deserved it. You don't know what she's done."

Ethan dropped beside Claire. "Hey. Look at me. Can you hear me?"

Claire was shaking so badly her teeth clicked. A red mark was forming near her temple.

"Lily," she whispered. "Get Lily."

He lifted his daughter from the crib and placed the baby against Claire's chest. Lily's cries softened into frightened hiccups.

Margaret pushed herself upright. Her voice turned cold.

"If you protect her tonight, Ethan, you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

He stood between his mother and his family.

"Get out of my house."

Margaret laughed once, almost sadly.

"Your house?" she said. "That's what she told you?"

Ethan's stomach tightened.

Margaret reached into the pocket of her robe and pulled out a folded document.

"Ask your wife whose name is really on the deed."

May you like

Claire's face went white.

And Ethan realized the nightmare in the nursery had started long before he opened the door.
