Chapter 2 - The Paper in Her Hand

Ethan wanted to call 911 immediately.

Claire stopped him with one sentence.

"Take the paper first."

Margaret held it out like a winning card.

Ethan snatched it from her hand. It was a photocopy of a property transfer, dated eight months earlier. The address was theirs. The signature at the bottom looked like his.

The buyer was not Ethan Hale.

It was Claire Morgan Hale.

His wife's maiden name appeared in the trust section.

"What is this?" he asked.

Claire swallowed. "I was going to tell you."

"Tell me what?"

Margaret gave a sharp laugh. "That she stole your house?"

Claire flinched.

Ethan turned on his mother. "You don't get to say another word until the police arrive."

"The police?" Margaret straightened her robe. "Call them. I'll tell them your wife attacked me first. I'll tell them she is unstable. Three weeks postpartum, no sleep, crying all day. Who do you think they'll believe?"

Claire's eyes filled.

Ethan looked at the bruise rising on her temple and felt ashamed that, for even half a second, his mother's words had made him hesitate.

He took out his phone.

Margaret's confidence cracked.

"Ethan. Don't be stupid."

He dialed.

The next twenty minutes changed the shape of the family forever. Two officers photographed Claire's injuries, separated everyone, and took statements. Margaret insisted Claire had screamed at her and tried to keep her from Lily. Claire said very little. She answered questions in a flat voice while rocking the baby.

One officer asked Ethan quietly, "Did you actually see your mother strike your wife?"

"Yes."

"More than once?"

"Yes."

That was enough for the room to go still.

Margaret was led out of the house just after midnight.

As she passed Ethan, she whispered, "Check the basement safe."

He stared at her.

She smiled.

"Then ask Claire who paid off your business loan."

The front door shut behind her.

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan turned slowly.

"There is no basement safe," he said.

May you like

Claire looked down at Lily.

"Yes," she whispered. "There is."
