Chapter 7 - What Claire Had Been Hiding

Claire did not deny it.

That hurt more than Ethan expected.

"You were investigating my family?"

"Your mother was investigating me first."

"That's not an answer."

"No. It's the reason."

Detective Brooks stood. "I'll give you two a minute. Don't touch anything in those folders. They're potential evidence."

When the detective stepped into the hallway, Ethan faced his wife.

Claire looked exhausted, but her voice was steady.

"Six months ago Margaret told me you would eventually leave me. She said she had made sure I would walk away with nothing."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every time I brought up something cruel she did, you explained it."

Ethan opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

She was right.

Mom's stressed.

Mom's grieving.

Mom doesn't mean it like that.

She's old-fashioned.

How many excuses had he built around Margaret until Claire had no room to breathe?

Claire continued. "Then I found out someone had requested my medical records using a forged authorization. Someone also called my old employer asking whether I'd ever been disciplined for dishonesty."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"You think Mom did that?"

"I know she did. Her private investigator admitted she hired him."

"You spoke to him?"

"After he showed up outside Lily's ultrasound appointment."

Ethan felt sick.

Claire told him she had begun documenting everything. During that search, she found Thomas's attorney, who told her about the trust and the letter. Then Noah's former girlfriend, Rachel Dunn, contacted her.

"What did Rachel say?"

"That Noah was afraid of Margaret before he died."

"Afraid how?"

"He told Rachel he had copied financial records. He thought your mother was stealing from the family business. He hid the originals somewhere Margaret would never think to look."

Ethan remembered Noah's room. Baseball cards. Old guitars. A broken clock he refused to throw away.

"Where?"

Claire shook her head. "Rachel didn't know."

Brooks returned carrying her phone.

"You need to see this."

She placed the screen on the table.

A security camera two blocks away had captured the SUV leaving Ethan's neighborhood.

The image was grainy, but the driver was visible for one frame.

It was not Margaret.

It was Ethan's uncle, Robert Hale.
