Chapter 19 - The Last Secret

Ethan almost refused.
Claire surprised him.
"Go."
"Why?"
"Because if you don't, you'll always wonder what she was going to say. But go for you. Not for her."
The jail interview room smelled like disinfectant and old coffee.
Margaret sat behind thick glass in a plain uniform, her hair pulled back without care. No jewelry. No tailored suit. No stage.
Ethan picked up the phone.
She did the same.
"You look tired," she said.
"What do you want?"
"To tell you the truth about Noah."
"For once?"
Her mouth tightened.
"Noah was going to leave. He had already accepted a job in Seattle. Your father planned to go with him after the divorce."
Ethan stared at her.
"What divorce?"
"Thomas was leaving me. Noah helped him find an attorney."
Pieces shifted into place.
The missing money. The panic. The chase. Thomas's later investigation.
Margaret had not only feared exposure.
She had feared abandonment.
"You couldn't stand losing control," Ethan said.
"I built that family."
"You trapped it."
Her eyes flashed.
"Everything I did was to keep us together."
"No. Everything you did was to keep us under you."
She leaned closer to the glass.
"Claire will leave you too. Maybe not this year. Maybe not next year. But she will. People always leave."
For the first time, Ethan heard the fear beneath Margaret's cruelty.
It did not excuse anything.
But it explained the shape of the cage she had built.
"Then they get to leave," he said. "That's what love means. People stay because they choose you, not because you make escape impossible."
Margaret stared at him.
He continued, "Noah deserved that choice. Dad deserved it. Claire deserves it. Lily will deserve it one day too."
Margaret's eyes filled.
"And me?"
Ethan held the phone tighter.
"You had choices too."
She looked away.
The guard tapped the door.
Time.
Ethan started to hang up.
Margaret suddenly turned back.
"Ethan."
He paused.
"I did love you."
His throat tightened.
"I know," he said. "That's what makes it worse."
He hung up.
When he stepped outside, Claire was waiting with Lily asleep against her chest.
Ethan walked toward them.

But before he reached the car, Detective Brooks called his name.
"The grand jury just returned the indictments."
