Chapter 18 - The Cost of One Bullet

"Claire!"

Ethan dropped beside her.

For one endless second, all he could see was the dark mark spreading across the side of the police vest.

Then Claire gasped.

"I'm okay."

The round had struck the vest near her ribs. It had knocked the air from her lungs but had not penetrated.

Ethan almost collapsed from relief.

Across the church, officers wrestled Voss to the floor. Margaret stood frozen beside the altar, still holding Lily.

"Give me the baby," Brooks ordered.

Margaret clutched Lily tighter.

"She's my granddaughter."

"And you are under arrest."

For the first time, Margaret looked old.

Not powerful. Not elegant. Not terrifying.

Just old.

Her eyes searched for Ethan.

"Tell them this is a misunderstanding."

Ethan stood slowly.

Twelve years of fear, excuses, loyalty, guilt, and manipulation stood between them.

He walked forward and took Lily from her arms.

Margaret let go only when an officer touched her wrist.

"Ethan," she whispered. "I'm your mother."

He held his daughter against his chest.

"And Claire is my wife. Lily is my child. Noah was my brother. Dad was my father. You hurt all of us and called it love."

Margaret's face hardened again.

"You'll regret choosing her over your blood."

Ethan looked at Claire, now standing with help from a paramedic.

"No," he said. "I'm finally choosing my family."

Margaret was handcuffed.

Voss was taken away in another vehicle.

The arrests triggered a chain reaction. With Voss in custody, prosecutors recovered deleted records from his old computer. Bank deposits tied him to Margaret. Robert agreed to testify in exchange for consideration on his own charges. Rachel turned over every payment Margaret had sent her.

Then came the forensic report on Thomas Hale.

His preserved medical samples, retained by the hospital after an earlier procedure, showed repeated exposure to a cardiac medication he had never been prescribed.

The medication had been found in Margaret's storage unit.

Ethan read the report in silence.

Brooks sat across from him.

"This is enough to reopen your father's death as a homicide investigation."

Ethan closed his eyes.

He had wanted the truth.

Now he had to survive it.

Then Brooks added, "Margaret is asking to speak to you before arraignment. She says she has one final secret about Noah."
