Chapter 6 - The Car That Shouldn't Exist

Ethan read the registration record three times.
Margaret Hale. Black Chevrolet Tahoe. Plate ending K9L.
"She sold that SUV years ago," he said.
Detective Brooks nodded. "According to the DMV, she sold it eleven months after Noah died."
Claire looked at Ethan. "What happened the night Noah crashed?"
He rubbed both hands over his face.
"We fought."
"About what?"
"Dad's company. Noah found out Mom had been moving money from one account to another. He said he was going to tell Dad. I thought he was exaggerating. I told him he loved drama." Ethan laughed bitterly. "Those were almost my last words to him."
He remembered Noah grabbing his jacket, furious.
Mom is going to destroy Dad if he doesn't wake up.
Then Noah had left.
Margaret arrived home an hour later, wet from the rain. She told everyone Noah had called her drunk and angry. By morning, a state trooper was at their door.
Ethan sat down hard.
"She said she had been at church that night."
Brooks wrote something. "Was that verified?"
"I never questioned it."
Claire did.
"Thomas did," she said.
Ethan looked at her.
Claire opened another folder from the safe. Inside were copies of bank statements and a handwritten timeline prepared by Ethan's father.
At 10:12 p.m., Margaret's credit card had been used at a gas station less than six miles from the crash site.
At 10:34 p.m., Noah's car went through the guardrail.
At 10:51 p.m., Margaret called Thomas from home.
"Dad knew," Ethan whispered.
"He suspected," Claire corrected. "He never had proof she caused the crash."
Brooks closed the folder. "Suspicion is not proof. And the SUV outside your house last night may not be the same vehicle. Plates can be copied. Records can be manipulated."
Ethan nodded, but his mind was somewhere else.
His mother had spent twelve years teaching him to hate his dead brother's final choices.
What if Noah had made no reckless choice at all?
His phone rang.
Margaret.
Brooks raised a hand. "Put it on speaker."
Ethan answered.
His mother's voice came through soft and composed.
"You should ask Claire why she was meeting Noah's old girlfriend last month."
Claire jerked upright.
Margaret continued, "Because your wife has been investigating us behind your back for almost a year."
Then she hung up.

Ethan slowly turned toward Claire.
"Is that true?"
