Chapter 11 - Rachel's Choice

Claire backed away from the hotel door with Lily in her arms.
"Why would Margaret send you?"
Rachel's voice came through the wood.
"To convince you that Ethan is dangerous. She gave me money. She told me what to say. I took it because I needed her to trust me."
Claire looked through the peephole.
A thin woman in a gray coat stood alone, hands visible.
Ethan was still on the phone. "Do not open that door until police get there."
Rachel heard him through the speaker.
"Good," she said. "Don't trust me. Just listen."
She lowered her voice.
"Margaret has a storage unit in Westfield under the name Marie Lawson. Noah's missing files are there. So are copies of letters Thomas wrote to a lawyer. She plans to empty it tonight."
Claire asked, "How do you know?"
"Because I'm supposed to help her."
Within minutes, two officers arrived and detained Rachel for questioning. Brooks obtained an emergency warrant for the storage unit.
At 3:05 a.m., Ethan and Claire watched from a police SUV across the street as investigators rolled up the metal door.
Inside were twelve boxes.
Bank ledgers.
Burner phones.
Copies of medical records belonging to Claire.
Photographs of Ethan and Claire taken without their knowledge.
A folder labeled LILY.
Ethan's hands clenched.
Brooks opened it wearing gloves.
Inside were printouts about grandparents' rights, emergency guardianship, postpartum psychosis, and involuntary psychiatric holds.
There was also a typed timeline of Claire's supposed "unstable behavior."
Most of it was invented.
One entry made Claire begin to cry.
PLAN: INCIDENT IN NURSERY. WITNESS CHILD AT RISK. ETHAN REMOVED OR PERSUADED.
The attack had not been a burst of anger.
Margaret had planned it.
She had intended to provoke Claire, injure herself if necessary, and create a record that Claire was violent around the baby.
But Ethan had walked in too early.
"She was trying to take Lily," Claire whispered.
Brooks nodded grimly.
Then an officer called from the back of the unit.
"Detective, you need to see this."
Behind the boxes was a locked metal trunk.

Inside lay Noah's jacket from the night he died.
And in its pocket was a memory card no police report had ever mentioned.
