Chapter 14 - The Fire

The fire destroyed two floors before firefighters contained it.

Margaret claimed she had gone to the office to collect personal belongings and smelled smoke on her way out.

No one believed the timing.

But suspicion still was not a conviction.

Brooks's team recovered cloud backups showing years of unauthorized transfers from Hale Development into companies controlled by Margaret and Robert. Robert's role was messy: sometimes accomplice, sometimes frightened witness, sometimes beneficiary.

"He may still face charges," Brooks warned Ethan.

"He should," Ethan said.

Blood did not erase choices anymore.

That night, Claire finally told Ethan the full story of the house.

Thomas had created a trust before his death. The home had originally belonged to Thomas personally, not to Hale Development. He transferred it into a trust for any future child Ethan might have, with Claire named trustee after Lily's birth.

"So Mom couldn't take it," Ethan said.

"That was the idea."

"Why put you in control instead of me?"

Claire hesitated. "Your father wrote that you had spent your whole life trying to keep Margaret happy. He was afraid she'd pressure you into signing it away."

Ethan looked down.

Even dead, his father had understood him better than he understood himself.

The following morning, Margaret appeared on local television.

She stood outside her attorney's office in a cream suit, composed and tearful.

"My son is being manipulated by a woman who has isolated him from his family," she told reporters. "I am deeply concerned for my granddaughter's safety."

Claire stared at the screen.

"She's doing it anyway."

Margaret continued, describing Claire as emotionally fragile after childbirth. She claimed the nursery incident had been a misunderstanding and suggested Ethan had "misinterpreted" what he saw.

Within an hour, strangers were posting Claire's name online.

Within two, someone leaked the hotel location.

Brooks moved them again.

As Ethan carried bags through a back exit, a reporter shouted, "Mr. Hale, did your wife attack your mother?"

Ethan stopped.

Cameras swung toward him.

Claire whispered, "Don't."

He turned anyway.

"My mother attacked my wife while our newborn was in the crib," he said clearly. "I saw it. I will testify to it."

The hallway went silent.

Then a reporter called out, "Did your mother kill your brother?"

Ethan froze.

That information had never been released.

Someone inside the investigation was leaking.
