Chapter 12 - Noah's Last Recording

The memory card contained one audio file.

Twelve years old.

Eight minutes, forty-three seconds long.

Brooks played it in an interview room the next morning with Ethan and Claire sitting side by side.

At first there was only road noise.

Then Noah's voice.

"If anybody finds this, Mom knows I copied the accounts. She's behind me now."

Ethan covered his mouth.

Noah sounded alive. Annoyed. Scared. So young.

A horn blared in the recording.

Noah cursed.

"She's trying to make me pull over."

Another engine roared closer.

Then Noah said something Ethan would hear in his dreams for the rest of his life.

"Ethan was right to stay out of it. Don't drag him into this."

Ethan bent forward, eyes squeezed shut.

His brother had not died angry at him.

He had been protecting him.

The final seconds were chaos: tires, rain, Noah shouting, a violent impact, then nothing.

Claire gripped Ethan's hand.

Brooks stopped the audio.

"This changes the case."

"Enough for murder?" Ethan asked.

"Potentially manslaughter, evidence tampering, conspiracy, financial crimes. We still need to connect Margaret directly to the vehicle and cover-up."

Rachel supplied part of that connection.

She admitted Margaret had contacted her after Noah's funeral and paid her to stay quiet about Noah's accusations. Rachel had been twenty-two, broke, terrified, and convinced the Hale family could destroy her.

"I hated myself for taking the money," she said.

Ethan looked at her for a long time.

"You should have come forward."

"I know."

It was not forgiveness. But it was the first honest thing anyone had said about that night in years.

Then Brooks received a call from the hospital.

Robert was awake.

They drove there immediately.

Robert looked smaller beneath the white sheets.

He asked for Ethan alone.

When the room cleared, he whispered, "There's something else about your father."

Ethan leaned closer.

Robert's eyes filled with fear.

"Thomas didn't die from a heart attack."

The monitor beside the bed continued its steady electronic rhythm.

Ethan stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

May you like

Robert swallowed.

"I'm saying your mother buried two men who tried to expose her."
