Chapter 11 - The File With My Name

My obstetrician's office confirmed that Daniel had previously been listed as an authorized person for appointment scheduling and basic care coordination.

That did not mean he was entitled to copy my full chart, but six weeks earlier he had picked up a sealed envelope I had requested for insurance paperwork.

I never received it.

Daniel had told me the clinic forgot to prepare it.

When I confronted him by text, he replied almost immediately.

I gave Mom copies of two visit summaries. I thought they would show context.

Context for what?

That you were anxious, he wrote.

I stared at the message until anger replaced shock.

One of those visits had happened after an ultrasound technician used the phrase "possible abnormality" and left us alone for forty minutes before the doctor returned to explain that the baby's anatomy was normal.

Daniel stopped apologizing.

His messages became careful and cold.

I am requesting reasonable updates regarding our child.

I replied with medical facts and nothing else.

The baby is healthy. My next appointment is Friday.

He asked to attend.

I said no.

That afternoon, someone knocked on Rachel's door.

A woman in a navy coat introduced herself as a private investigator.

"I'm not speaking with you," I said.

"I just have a few questions about your living arrangement."

"Please leave."

She looked past me into the apartment. "Are you sleeping in the bedroom? Is Ms. Torres providing daily care?"

Rachel stepped forward. "Leave now."

That night, I started a notebook.

Two days later, Maya called.

"We received a letter from Daniel's attorney."

"What does it say?"

"They want you to agree to a postpartum mental-health assessment within twenty-four hours of delivery and to allow Daniel immediate unsupervised access to the baby."

"No."

"That's my recommendation too."

I exhaled.

Then Maya added, "Emily, they also attached an affidavit from Margaret."

"Of course they did."

"She claims you threatened her with a knife three months ago."

I went completely still.

May you like

Because three months ago, there had been a knife.

But Margaret had left out the one person who saw what really happened.
