Chapter 16 - The Witness Who Broke
"Your job is not to destroy them," she said. "Your job is to be credible."
Then Daniel's cousin Ben called me at midnight.
He was breathing hard.
"Emily, I need to tell you before I lose my nerve."
"Tell me what?"
"Margaret called me."
My stomach tightened.
"She knows I gave you a statement."
"What did she say?"
"That if I testify, Daniel will make sure my dad loses his biggest client. She said family loyalty has consequences."
"Did you record it?"
He was silent.
Then: "Yes."
Maya nearly cheered when she heard the audio the next morning.
Margaret's voice was unmistakable.
You walk into court against this family, Ben, don't expect this family to protect yours.
It wasn't a movie-villain confession.
It was better.
It was pressure on a witness.
Ben's fear turned into anger.
"I'm testifying," he said. "Now I really am."
Carol agreed to testify too.
Denise provided her statement and the photograph.
Owen prepared a report explaining the fake message evidence.
The hospital social worker documented my condition after delivery.
My doctor provided records showing no diagnosis that supported Margaret's claims.
Three days before the hearing, Daniel asked through the lawyers for a supervised visit with Noah.
Maya looked at me. "Your choice, but reasonable contact can help demonstrate that you're not trying to erase him."
So I agreed.
The visit took place at a family center.
Daniel walked into the room and saw Noah for the first time.
He stopped breathing.
"That's him?"
Daniel sat down and held out his arms.
I handed him our son.
The moment Noah settled against his chest, Daniel broke.
He cried silently, tears dropping onto the baby's blanket.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
I didn't know whether he meant me or Noah.
When the visit ended, he handed Noah back.
Then he leaned close and said something too low for the supervisor to hear.
"My mother is going to lie under oath."
I stared at him.
"How do you know?"
May you like
Daniel swallowed.
"Because she asked me to lie with her."
