Chapter 2 - Three Days of Silence

For three days, I told myself I had misunderstood.

Daniel acted normal.

Too normal.

He made coffee. He kissed my cheek before leaving for work. He asked whether the baby had been kicking. At night, he rested his hand on my stomach and smiled when our son moved.

"Strong little guy," he whispered.

On the third afternoon, Daniel texted that he would be late. I was looking for the warranty folder for the breast pump because it had stopped charging. Daniel kept household papers in the bottom drawer of his office cabinet.

The drawer was locked.

It had never been locked before.

I stared at it for a full minute.

Then I remembered the small brass key he kept in the ceramic bowl on his desk.

My fingers were cold when I opened the drawer.

The warranty folder was on top.

Under it was a thick manila envelope with no label.

Inside were printed emails, notes, screenshots, and draft legal documents.

My name appeared on the first page.

EMILY CARTER.

Underneath were words that made my ears ring.

"Pattern of emotional instability."

"Potential risk to infant."

"Recommend immediate petition for temporary sole custody following delivery."

I stopped breathing.

There were dates beside incidents I barely remembered. The day I cried after my mother’s birthday. The night I had a panic attack after a false-positive prenatal screening. The morning I forgot to turn off the stove burner.

A handwritten note in the margin said: Build history now. Do not wait until birth.

The handwriting was Margaret's.

I turned another page.

There were photos of dirty dishes in the sink.

A screenshot of a text I had sent Daniel at two in the morning: I can't do this. I'm so exhausted.

Another note: possible postpartum danger.

My hands started shaking so badly the papers rattled.

Then I reached the draft declaration.

At the bottom were two names.

Margaret Carter.

And directly beside hers:

Daniel Carter.

My husband hadn't failed to protect me.

He had been helping her build the weapon.

Then the front door opened downstairs.
