Chapter 12 - The Knife Story

The knife incident happened at a barbecue in June.
I had been slicing watermelon when Margaret cornered me in the kitchen.
"Daniel tells me you don't want me in the delivery room," she said.
I kept cutting. "That's right."
"I'm his mother."
"And I'm the patient."
She reached for the knife—not the blade, but the handle—as if she intended to take it from me.
"Don't be ridiculous."
I pulled my hand back and said, "Don't grab things out of my hand."
That was it.
No threat. No raised knife. No attack.
And Daniel's cousin Ben had walked in during the argument.
Margaret's affidavit claimed I "brandished a kitchen knife" and said she would "never get near my baby."
I called Ben.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"Hey, Emily."
"I need to ask you something uncomfortable."
When I explained, he was quiet.
"She said you threatened her?"
"Yes."
"That's not what happened."
Relief hit so hard I almost cried.
"Would you tell my lawyer that?"
Another silence.
"Emily, Daniel's family is going to destroy me."
"I know."
"My dad works with Daniel."
"I know."
"Give me an hour."
He hung up.
Forty-three minutes later, he called back.
"I'll tell the truth."
For the first time, Margaret's story had a living witness who wasn't afraid enough to stay quiet.
Maya prepared a response. Ben signed a statement. Carol did too.
Then Daniel did something I didn't expect.
He asked to come to my next prenatal appointment through his lawyer.
I refused again.
That night, he sent a message that wasn't polished by an attorney.
Please, Emily. I want to hear his heartbeat.
I typed one sentence.
You should have thought about his heartbeat before you helped your mother build a case against his mother.
I turned off my phone.
At 2:16 a.m., I woke with a sharp cramp across my lower back.
At 2:21, another came.

At 2:26, my water broke.
I was four weeks early.
