Chapter 19 - Margaret's Secret

Daniel told me the truth two days later through our attorneys.

Before he was born, Margaret had a daughter.

Her name was Anna.

Margaret had been nineteen. The father left. Margaret's own mother pressured her to place the baby for adoption.

She did.

She regretted it for the rest of her life.

Years later, she tried to find Anna. When she finally did, Anna wanted no relationship with her.

Margaret took that rejection and built her whole identity around Daniel.

He became the child who could never leave.

Then he married me.

And when I became pregnant, something in her old wound turned poisonous.

Margaret requested a meeting before the protective-order hearing. Maya advised against a private conversation, but agreed to a structured settlement conference with attorneys present.

She looked at me and said, "You look tired."

"I have a newborn."

"Exactly my concern."

Maya interrupted. "We're here to discuss no-contact terms."

Margaret ignored her.

"Emily, Daniel has ruined this family with his weakness. But you can still fix it."

"How?"

"Drop the protective order. Let me see Noah. We can stop humiliating each other in court."

"You slapped me."

"You were screaming in my face."

"You fabricated evidence."

"Daniel did that."

"You threatened witnesses."

"Ben misunderstood."

I studied her.

"I'm not dropping anything," I said.

Her smile vanished.

"Then you're taking my grandson from me."

"No. Your choices did that."

She leaned forward. "You think you've won because a judge felt sorry for you? Daniel will always be his father. I will always be Daniel's mother. I will get back in."

I reached into my bag and placed a small speaker on the table.

Maya had approved this.

I pressed play.

Margaret's own voice filled the room.

Once Noah is with us, she'll fall apart. And when she falls apart, we'll have everything we need to keep him.

Margaret's face emptied.

I stopped the recording.

"You don't get to call this love anymore."

She stood.

"You little—"

Her attorney grabbed her arm.

Maya rose too.

Margaret pointed at me, shaking.

"You destroyed my son."

I looked her straight in the eyes.

"No. You taught him how to destroy his marriage. He chose to learn."

But as she walked out, her attorney stayed behind.

May you like

He closed the door and turned to Maya.

"There's something you should know before tomorrow's hearing."
