Chapter 4 - The Emergency Room

I didn't turn around.

I got into my car, locked the doors, and called my best friend, Rachel.

"I need you," I said.

She heard my breathing and didn't ask questions. "Where are you?"

"Outside my house."

"Don't drive. I'm coming."

Ten minutes later, she pulled up so fast she parked halfway onto the curb.

The moment she saw my face, her expression changed.

"Who hit you?"

I started crying.

Rachel opened my passenger door. "Emily. Who hit you?"

"Margaret."

Her whole body went still. "And Daniel?"

I handed her three pages I had shoved into my purse before leaving.

She read them once.

Then again.

"Oh my God."

"He signed it."

Rachel looked toward my house. "I'm going in there."

"No. Hospital first."

At the emergency room, the nurses put me on a fetal monitor. The baby's heartbeat was strong, but I had contractions from stress and dehydration. A doctor examined the red mark on my cheek and the bruise forming on my hip.

"Do you feel safe going home?" she asked.

I stared at the ceiling.

"No."

That was the first honest answer I had given anyone in years.

A social worker came in. I told her about the slap, the legal papers, the threats. She documented everything. She asked whether I wanted the police contacted.

I hesitated.

Rachel squeezed my hand. "Documentation matters."

So I said yes.

An officer took photographs of my cheek. He wrote down Margaret's name and Daniel's threat. He explained that custody wasn't something Daniel could enforce by yelling in a driveway, especially before the baby was even born.

"But save every message," he said. "Don't delete anything."

At 9:14 p.m., Daniel sent the first text.

Come home. Mom left. We need to talk calmly.

At 9:19:

You're making this worse than it needs to be.

At 9:27:

If you involve police, my lawyer will need to know.

At 9:41:

Please don't make me choose between you and my son.

Rachel drove me to her apartment after midnight. I slept in her bed while she took the couch.

At six in the morning, someone pounded on the front door.

Rachel checked the peephole.

"It's Daniel," she whispered.

Then she looked again.

"And he brought the police."
