Chapter 17 - The Hearing

The courtroom was smaller than I expected.

Margaret sat behind Daniel wearing pearls and a calm expression, like she was attending church.

She never looked at me.

Daniel did.

Once.

Then he looked away.

The judge reviewed the emergency filing first.

Daniel's attorney described me as emotionally volatile, controlling, and unwilling to support a father-son relationship.

Maya responded with the police report, the hospital documentation, and the nursery recording.

Then the audio played.

Margaret's voice filled the courtroom.

She doesn't have to be dangerous. She only has to look unstable long enough for a judge to get cautious.

Ben testified about the knife incident.

Carol testified that Margaret had talked about "getting the baby" months before the birth.

Denise testified about the second nursery and the boxes of files.

Owen explained the fake messages.

Then Margaret took the stand.

She denied fabricating anything.

She said she had only been a concerned grandmother.

Maya asked, "Did you tell your nephew that family loyalty has consequences?"

"I don't recall."

The recording played.

Margaret's lips tightened.

"I was upset."

"Did you tell Daniel that Mrs. Carter only had to look unstable?"

"That was taken out of context."

"What context makes that statement appropriate?"

Margaret didn't answer.

Then came Daniel.

His attorney asked about my anxiety, my crying, my decision to leave.

Daniel answered carefully.

Then Maya stood.

"Mr. Carter, did you know some of the text messages submitted against your wife were fabricated?"

His attorney objected.

The judge allowed the question.

Daniel stared at the table.

"Yes."

Margaret whispered, "Daniel."

Maya continued. "Did you tell your attorney before filing the emergency motion?"

"No."

"Did you permit your mother to use private medical information to characterize your wife as unstable?"

"Yes."

"Did you believe your wife was a danger to Noah?"

Daniel's face crumpled.

"No."

Maya asked the final question.

"Then why did you ask this court to remove a newborn from his mother?"

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then at me.

"Because I was afraid my mother would leave me if I didn't."

Margaret stood so fast her chair scraped the floor.

"You coward!"

The judge ordered her to sit.

She didn't.

Instead, she pointed at me and screamed, "She was going to take him away from us!"

And that was when the judge ordered the bailiff to remove her from the courtroom.
