Chapter 6 - The Plan After Birth

I read the sentence until the letters blurred.
"Trigger what?" Rachel asked.
Maya's voice stayed calm. "Based on the surrounding notes, they may have been planning to portray normal postpartum distress as a psychiatric emergency."
"They wanted me committed?"
"I can't say that from this page alone. But they were clearly discussing an evaluation and using it in custody proceedings."
I felt sick.
Daniel had asked me twice whether depression ran in my family. I thought he was worried about postpartum depression.
Maybe he had been taking notes.
Maya leaned forward. "From now on, assume anything you say to Daniel can be saved, quoted, or twisted. Keep communication in writing when possible. Stay calm. Be factual."
"So I have to act like a robot while they terrorize me?"
"No. You get to be human. But you also get to be smart."
We made a list.
Medical records. Police report. Photos of the slap. Copies of the documents. Screenshots of Daniel's texts. Names of witnesses. Dates Margaret entered the house. Any proof she had been searching my belongings.
Then Maya asked, "Do you have cameras?"
I blinked.
"A doorbell camera. And a nursery camera Daniel installed."
"Who owns the account?"
"I created it."
Rachel grabbed my laptop.
The nursery camera had been unplugged two weeks earlier because the room was finished. But the account showed archived motion clips from the days before Daniel unplugged it.
Then we found a clip from a Tuesday afternoon when I had been at a prenatal appointment.
Margaret stood in the nursery doorway.
Daniel sat in the rocking chair.
The audio was clear.
"You need more than crying," Margaret said. "Any woman cries. We need a pattern."
Daniel rubbed his hands together. "I hate doing this."
"Then think about your son. She'll control everything once he's born."
"Emily isn't dangerous."
Margaret leaned closer.
"She doesn't have to be dangerous. She only has to look unstable long enough for a judge to get cautious."
Nobody in the kitchen moved.
On-screen, Daniel looked down.
Then he said, "What do you need me to save?"
My vision narrowed.
Maya immediately told me to download the clip, preserve the original, and make backups.
I reached for the mouse.
But before I could click anything, the account logged me out.
