Chapter 11 - Four Minutes

Investigators reconstructed the boat trip minute by minute.
Launch: 2:11 p.m.
Tourist photograph: 2:38.
Caroline's phone video: 2:44.
Phone disconnected: 2:47.
Emergency call: 3:16.
Grant claimed Caroline fell at 3:12.
Vivian claimed she left at a private dock before three.
Then police obtained data from a fitness watch linked to Vivian.
At 3:09, she was still on the boat.
At 3:13, her heart rate jumped to 161.
At 3:15, the watch recorded fast movement toward the stern.
Her story collapsed.
Grant's did too.
Both remained aboard for several minutes before calling 911.
Caroline was a weak swimmer.
Four minutes mattered.
Grant offered to testify against Vivian.
He claimed she drugged Caroline without his knowledge.
Vivian claimed Grant shoved Caroline after she threatened to expose them.
Prosecutors trusted neither.
Then they found something older.
A document from Grant's office called CONTINUITY.
Dated fourteen months before Kessler ever examined Lily.
Goal:
Keep Mercer family voting control consolidated through Lily's minority.
If necessary, extend guardianship through medical exception.
Rebecca read the last line twice.
Grant had planned to use his daughter's health before anyone called her troubled.
Vivian had not invented the scheme.
She joined it.
At a hearing, Grant requested supervised contact with Lily.
Dr. Patel opposed it.
"She still associates her father with confinement and punishment."
Grant spoke anyway.
"I love my daughter."
The judge looked at him.
"Love is not established by saying the word."
Contact was denied.
Back at Rebecca's home, Lily asked:
"Daddy today?"
"No."
Lily nodded and returned to her blocks.
Relief.
Not disappointment.
Then an unknown number texted Rebecca.
A photograph of Grant holding newborn Lily.
Under it:
YOU THINK VIVIAN STARTED THIS?
A second message appeared.
ASK WHAT CAROLINE FOUND BEFORE VIVIAN.
Rebecca stared at the phone.

The sender knew the scheme had begun earlier.
And whoever it was had waited years to speak.
