Chapter 4 - The Trust

Caroline Mercer had died two years earlier in what police called a boating accident.
She left more than memories.
She left the Mercer Childhood Trust.
The trust held millions and a major block of family stock.
Grant controlled it temporarily.
Only until Lily turned five.
Then an independent trustee would take over.
Rebecca learned that Grant had filed a petition three weeks before the party asking the court to delay that transfer.
His reason:
Lily allegedly had severe behavioral problems and might require long-term institutional care.
Rebecca stared at the filing.
"She's three."
Detective Brooks nodded.
"And someone has spent months creating records that make her look unstable."
The records came from Dr. Alan Kessler.
His reports described violent tantrums, food refusal, aggression, and destructive behavior.
Dr. Nia Patel, the independent pediatric specialist assigned to Lily, read them twice.
"This doesn't match the child I examined."
Brooks pointed to one entry.
"Kessler says Lily overturned a solid oak nursery table."
They inspected the nursery.
The table was bolted to the floor.
The first major medical claim collapsed immediately.
Police interviewed staff.
Most remembered nothing useful.
One housekeeper cried.
The cook looked terrified.
The nanny, Sonia Vale, was gone.
Grant said Sonia had been fired for stealing $18,000.
There was no police report.
No civil claim.
No repayment demand.
Nothing.
The termination date was the morning after one basement video showed Vivian deliberately spilling water after Lily had cleaned.
Rebecca whispered, "Sonia saw it."
Brooks requested phone records.
Sonia's last known signal came from a motel outside Memphis.
Her final outgoing message had been sent to Rebecca.
Rebecca had never received it.
Investigators recovered the deleted text from the carrier.
Six words:
CAROLINE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THEM BOTH.
Rebecca read it again.
"Both?"
Brooks looked toward the evidence board.
Grant.
Vivian.
Then an analyst called.
Dr. Kessler had just canceled his appointments and purchased a one-way ticket to Mexico City.
May you like
Brooks grabbed her coat.
"Now we find out why a pediatric specialist is running before anyone has accused him of anything."
