Chapter 6 - Eleven Minutes Before

Caroline's video began with wind whipping her hair.

"Grant, stop moving money."

His voice came from off camera.

"You don't understand the structure."

"I understand theft."

Then Vivian spoke.

"Lower your voice."

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Vivian had been on the boat.

Caroline turned the phone.

For two seconds, Vivian appeared near the cabin in a red scarf.

Grant stood at the wheel.

Caroline said, "If either of you touches Lily's trust again, I'm going to the board."

Grant moved toward her.

Vivian said, "Don't be dramatic."

Caroline's face hardened.

"You slept with my husband, and now you're helping him steal from our daughter."

Grant shouted, "Give me the phone."

The recording stopped.

No fall.

No attack.

No proof of murder.

But enough to destroy the official story.

Grant was arrested on financial, evidence-tampering, and child-abuse charges.

Vivian was arrested separately.

Then Kessler asked to cooperate.

He admitted falsifying Lily's reports.

He admitted taking money.

He admitted meeting Sonia at the Memphis motel.

"What did you do to her?" Brooks asked.

"Nothing."

"Then why meet her?"

"To pay her to leave."

"Whose money?"

Kessler stared at the table.

"Grant's."

"Why?"

"She copied a recording from his office."

"Of Lily?"

"No."

Brooks leaned forward.

"Of what?"

"Grant and Vivian talking about Caroline."

Kessler claimed he had no idea where Sonia went afterward.

Brooks believed that part.

Which meant someone else may have followed her.

Then Memphis police called.

A frightened woman had just walked into a precinct asking for Detective Brooks.

Sonia Vale was alive.

She carried a grocery bag.

Inside it were a burner phone, a child's pink sweater, and five folded pages wrapped in plastic.

Caroline's missing letter.

The first line read:

Grant has been planning to use Lily's health to keep control of her money.

May you like

And the last line named another person Caroline feared.

Vivian.
