Chapter 5 - The Doctor

Agents stopped Dr. Alan Kessler at Nashville International.

His briefcase contained forty thousand dollars in cash, two prepaid phones, and a flash drive labeled M-CHILD.

He claimed the cash was for travel.

Nobody believed him.

The flash drive contained drafts of Lily's behavioral reports.

The earliest versions described separation anxiety, grief, and age-appropriate tantrums.

Then the language changed.

Aggression.

Danger to self.

Danger to others.

The edits came from an account named V.Mercer.

Vivian.

One file also showed edits from G.Mercer.

Grant had personally inserted:

Child may require residential placement before fifth birthday.

Rebecca felt sick.

Before five.

Before control of Caroline's trust moved away from Grant.

Kessler asked for a lawyer.

Police searched his office.

They found payments routed through Mercer Foundation consulting companies.

They also found a scanned page in Caroline's handwriting.

Dated three weeks before her death.

If anything happens to me, do not let Grant control Lily's trust.

Only the last page remained.

The first five were missing.

Brooks reopened Caroline's death file.

Grant had told police Caroline stood suddenly on their boat, lost her balance, and fell into the Cumberland River.

He said they were alone.

But one evidence photograph showed Caroline's life jacket still clipped beneath a bench.

Rebecca stared at it.

"She was terrified of deep water. She always wore one."

Another record showed a sedative in Caroline's blood.

Not enough to prove murder.

Enough to ask why it was there.

At Rebecca's home, Dr. Patel watched Lily draw.

A small child.

A woman labeled "Mommy Caroline."

A second woman in a red dress.

"Who's that?" Nia asked.

Lily whispered, "Boat lady."

Rebecca froze.

Vivian had told police she was never on the boat.

"How do you know boat?" Rebecca asked.

Lily immediately lowered her eyes.

"No tell."

Nia stopped the questioning.

But Brooks heard about it and obtained a warrant for Grant's private office.

Behind a locked drawer panel, detectives found Caroline's old phone.

It had never been turned over after her death.

On the phone was one unsent video.

Recorded eleven minutes before Caroline went into the river.

And the first voice heard after Caroline's was Vivian's.
