Chapter 7 - The Nanny Who Ran

Sonia refused to return to Nashville until federal agents guaranteed protection.

Rebecca went to Memphis.

The moment Sonia saw her, she cried.

"I left Lily."

"You were threatened."

"I still left."

Sonia explained that Caroline had begun collecting records before the boating trip.

She suspected Grant was moving foundation money.

She suspected his affair with Vivian.

Then she discovered a draft plan to extend Grant's control over Lily's trust through a medical incapacity clause.

"Vivian moved in and everything became a test," Sonia said.

"Spilled milk. Shoes in the wrong place. Crying too long. Asking for her mother."

"Why film it?"

"To show the reaction without showing what caused it."

Sonia unlocked the burner phone.

Grant's voice filled the room.

The board needs pattern, not perfection.

Vivian answered:

Then give me six months.

Grant:

No marks where people see.

Vivian:

I know how to handle a child.

Rebecca's hands shook.

Then Grant said:

Once the trust stays with me, none of this matters.

Sonia stopped the recording.

"I copied it from his office. They fired me the next morning."

Kessler later found her in Memphis and offered money to leave.

"He said Grant would report me for theft and destroy my sister's job if I stayed."

"Why did you come back?"

Sonia looked down.

"I saw the party video. I saw Lily with that brush."

Her voice broke.

"I couldn't run again."

Then she gave Brooks access to one more file.

Caroline's voice.

Recorded the night before the boat.

If you are hearing this, I failed to get ahead of them.

Caroline described waking at the bottom of three stairs weeks earlier with no memory of falling.

A wineglass had been placed beside her.

She had not been drinking.

Later she found crushed sedative in the bottle.

She saved a sample.

"The blue tin in Rebecca's sewing room," Caroline said.

Rebecca stared.

The old family house still existed.

Police searched it that night.

Behind Christmas boxes in an upstairs closet sat a faded blue tin.

Inside was a sealed vial of powder.

The lab rushed testing.

By morning, the result came back.

Same sedative found in Caroline's blood after the boat.

May you like

And Caroline's recording ended with one final sentence:

If I die, Grant will call it an accident.
