Chapter 18 - Caroline's Library

Two years after the reception, the Mercer mansion belonged to someone else.

Lily was five.

Old enough for Caroline's trust transition.

The independent trustee took control exactly as Caroline intended.

Rebecca stayed guardian.

The recovered foundation money helped fund something new.

The Caroline Mercer Family Library opened in East Nashville on Lily's fifth birthday.

No chandeliers.

No investors drinking bourbon.

Children ran between shelves.

Parents drank coffee.

Near the entrance hung a small plaque:

FOR EVERY CHILD WHO NEEDED AN ADULT TO NOTICE.

Lily sounded out the first word.

"For."

Rebecca smiled.

"Good."

A familiar voice came from behind them.

"She's getting good."

Lily spun.

"Sly!"

Stallone had come quietly.

No press announcement.

No red carpet.

He bent as Lily ran to him.

She was louder now.

Stronger.

Not waiting for permission.

He handed her a wrapped book.

"No crayons?" she asked.

"You have enough crayons."

"I do not."

Rebecca laughed.

Later Lily carried a paper cup of water toward a table.

She tripped.

The cup flew.

Water splashed across the floor.

Several adults turned.

Lily froze.

For one second the old reception hall returned to her face.

Rebecca saw it.

So did Stallone.

A librarian rolled over a yellow caution sign.

"Accidents happen."

Lily looked around.

"Not bad?"

"Not bad."

She grabbed a towel.

Stallone took another.

Rebecca took a third.

They wiped the floor together.

Ten seconds.

Done.

Lily stood.

Then flicked one tiny drop onto Rebecca's shoe.

Rebecca gasped.

Lily burst out laughing.

Stallone pointed at her.

"Troublemaker."

Her smile hesitated.

He caught it instantly.

"The fun kind."

She grinned again.

Outside, reporters waited for the public opening.

Rebecca had agreed to one statement.

A reporter asked:

"What changed that night?"

Rebecca looked through the glass at Lily.

"A room full of people finally stopped pretending they didn't see."

Another called:

"Was Sylvester Stallone the hero?"

Rebecca smiled.

"He helped."

Then she shook her head.

"But the lesson isn't that a child needs a famous person to walk through the door."
