Chapter 8 - The Red Thermos

The sedative match proved Caroline had been drugged before her death.

It did not prove who did it.

Detective Brooks rebuilt the boat trip from receipts, photographs, and witnesses.

Grant said he packed the drinks.

Vivian had claimed she never boarded.

The video already proved that lie.

Then a marina employee remembered a red thermos.

"The brunette had it."

"Vivian?"

He identified her photograph.

"She carried the thermos and a tote bag onto the boat."

A tourist photograph from the riverbank showed three adults aboard after launch.

Caroline.

Grant.

Vivian.

The case tightened.

At Rebecca's house, Lily began changing too.

One morning she spilled milk and froze.

Her face emptied.

"No downstairs?"

Rebecca grabbed towels.

"No downstairs."

"No brush?"

"No brush."

Lily stared.

Then she stepped in the puddle on purpose.

Rebecca laughed through tears.

Lily laughed too.

That same afternoon Sonia returned.

Lily ran into her arms.

"Sonia!"

"I'm sorry, baby."

Lily hugged her harder.

Stallone visited later to sign a formal witness statement before leaving Nashville.

Sonia thanked him.

"I just showed up," he said.

"That mattered."

"What matters more is what everybody does after showing up."

He left the next morning.

The investigation no longer needed a famous guest to keep it alive.

It had evidence.

Then federal accountants found the money.

Forty-eight million dollars had moved from Mercer-linked accounts into foundation companies controlled by Vivian.

Most of the "childhood literacy initiative" announced at the party existed only on paper.

The gala had been celebrating a fraud.

Brooks called Rebecca.

"Caroline was right about the trust, but the trust wasn't the only motive."

"How much did they steal?"

"Enough to ruin both of them."

Then Brooks slid over a bank record.

Two days after Caroline died, $250,000 had been paid to Dr. Kessler.

Rebecca frowned.

"He didn't start treating Lily until later."

"Exactly."

The memo line read:

C.M. CONSULT / INCIDENT.

Caroline Mercer.

The boating incident.

Kessler had been paid before anyone ever asked him to label Lily unstable.

And the retired detective who closed Caroline's case had suddenly hired a lawyer.
