Chapter 19 - No Permission Needed

Rebecca stepped closer to the microphones.

"The lesson is that when a child is crying in front of you, you don't need fame, money, permission, or perfect proof to care."

The reporters went quiet.

She thought of Denise calling 911.

Sonia coming back.

Renner finally admitting he had looked away.

Marcus bringing the old records.

Helen keeping Caroline's messages.

Dr. Patel refusing to confuse trauma with bad behavior.

And yes, Stallone walking across a marble room when everyone else had frozen.

But she also thought about the cost of waiting.

Caroline had spent months trying to make adults believe her.

Lily had spent months learning that adults watched.

That was the part Rebecca never wanted polished into a simple hero story.

Inside, Lily tugged at the door.

"Cake!"

Rebecca laughed.

"Coming."

She left the microphones.

At the small birthday table, Lily blew out five candles.

Sonia cried.

Dr. Patel pretended she wasn't crying.

Stallone stole frosting from the edge of the cake and got caught.

Lily pointed.

"Bad."

He froze dramatically.

"Downstairs?"

The adults went silent.

Lily did too.

Then Rebecca said gently:

"We don't joke about downstairs."

Stallone immediately nodded.

"You're right."

No defensiveness.

No excuse.

Just correction.

Lily watched.

This was new too.

An adult could make a mistake and admit it.

Nobody had to be humiliated.

Nobody had to win.

Stallone leaned toward Lily.

"My mistake."

She considered him.

"Okay."

Then she pushed an extra piece of cake toward him.

"Big one."

"Thank you."

After the party, Rebecca and Lily walked through the library alone.

Lily stopped beneath Caroline's photograph.

"Mommy built this?"

"Not exactly."

"Why name?"

"Because she wanted children protected."

Lily stared at the picture.

"Did she protect me?"

Rebecca's throat tightened.

"She tried very hard."

"Did you?"

"I'm trying."

Lily took her hand.

"Good."

One word.

No ceremony.

Enough.

Then Lily pulled Rebecca toward the exit.

She pushed open the heavy glass door herself.

Rebecca did not reach over to help.

She waited.

Lily pushed harder.

May you like

The door opened.

She stepped through without asking permission.
