Chapter 12 - Before Vivian

The anonymous sender was Marcus Lee, Grant's former chief financial officer.

Grant had pushed him out years earlier after Marcus refused to approve questionable trust transfers.

"Why hide now?" Brooks asked.

Marcus looked ashamed.

"Because I wanted Grant destroyed, but I was still afraid of him."

He brought records.

The earliest CONTINUITY draft predated Vivian's foundation role.

Grant had been seeking ways to extend control over Lily's money while Caroline was still alive.

One email read:

If C resists, medical contingency remains available.

Caroline.

Medical contingency.

Rebecca felt sick.

Grant's new claim that Vivian manipulated him was finished.

He had built the plan.

Vivian helped weaponize it.

When prosecutors withdrew Grant's cooperation offer, Vivian requested to see Rebecca.

Rebecca went to the jail.

Vivian sat behind glass.

No expensive dress.

No perfect hair.

"You think I made him cruel," Vivian said.

"I think you helped him."

"He was cruel before me."

"And you saw that as an opportunity."

Vivian looked away.

"Why Lily?" Rebecca asked.

"The trust."

"I know."

"No. You know part of it."

Vivian leaned closer.

"Caroline changed the trust two days before she died."

Rebecca froze.

"What change?"

"If Grant became unfit or died under suspicious circumstances, control didn't stay with his side of the family."

"Then who?"

Vivian smiled without humor.

"You."

Caroline's attorney confirmed it.

The signed amendment had been held in escrow.

Rebecca was named successor guardian and independent trustee if Grant was found responsible for financial misconduct or harm to Lily.

"I didn't know."

"That was deliberate," the attorney said. "Caroline believed knowledge could put you at risk."

The amendment allowed Rebecca to freeze the remaining trust accounts.

She did.

The money stopped moving.

Grant challenged her guardianship immediately.

His lawyer claimed Rebecca had encouraged Lily's accusations to gain control of the trust.

The judge appointed an independent guardian ad litem.

The guardian interviewed Lily over several weeks.

"What happens when you make a mistake at Aunt Rebecca's?"

Lily shrugged.

"Fix."

"And at Daddy's?"

Her face changed.

"Downstairs."

Grant's challenge failed.

Then Sonia found an envelope hidden behind a replaced baseboard in Lily's old nursery.

On the front, Caroline had written:

For Lily, when she is old enough to ask why.
